Objectives of the course:

Objectives of the course are to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of ventilation and its relation to indoor air quality, air motion and emission in and from the room air space, including the theoretical background, experimental and numerical research methods. Special emphasis will be on the linkage of controlled ventilation, air distribution, and indoor air quality and emission issues using varied cases. The students shall be able to estimate and analysis the indoor thermal climate condition, airflow, air quality and effects on emissions by using the ventilation conditions and system information. Finally, the students shall be able to design and perform the basic research activities including laboratory experiments for measurements, control air motion; measurements and analysis of airflow characteristics and the effects on particle transport and gas/odour emission, including the emission process in boundary layer.  Measurement techniques, concept of the modelling approach for emission estimation and numerical simulation shall be also addressed and introduced in the course.


Learning outcomes and competences:

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  • analysis the indoor thermal climate condition, airflow, air quality and effects on emissions by using the ventilation conditions and system information;
  • to design and perform the basic research activities on laboratory experiments for measurements, control air motion in ventilated room space;
  • to design and perform the basic research activities on measurements and analysis of airflow characteristics and the effects on particle transport and gas/odour emission, including the emission process in boundary layer


Compulsory programme:

Active participation, assignments including laboratory exercises and homework, presentations and the reports required.


Course contents:

   Modular 1 (MD1)

  1. Fundamental of ventilation and air motion in livestock production units
  2. Inlet air momentum, velocity decay and air speed at floor level
  3. Non-isothermal inlet air jets and airflow pattern control
  4. Computational Fluid Dynamics
  5. Scale model experiments and similarity

   Modular 2 (MD2)

  1. Emission modeling, estimation and Boundary layer theory
  2. Instrumentation, Sensors and Measurements for air motion and emissions
  3. Laboratory experiments on Emission process
  4. Status of the arts on ventilation control in practices
  5. Particle transport in air

The activities will include pre-reading of the relevant literature distributed in due time before the course, lectures, laboratory exercises and computation, student presentations and reports.


Prerequisites:

Recommended, but not mandatory, a mater degree of Engineering or Natural Science in the relevant direction.
