Objectives of the course: 
The objective of the course is to provide first year PhD students in statistical genetics, that have a biological background and limited statistical expertise, with the basic tools needed to perform computer-based genetic analyses.


Learning outcomes and competences:
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  • understand the statistical genetics literature and to implement the techniques needed for their own research projects.

  • Completion of exercise assignments
  • Completion of final project

Course contents:

  1. Likelihood
  2. Computing the likelihood
  3. Bayesian methods
  4. Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method in practice



  • Have an undergraduate degree in biology, agriculture or similar areas or in statistics or related field.
  • Have taken an introductory course in statistics
  • Have basic knowledge of calculus
  • Have minimum programming skills; for example with R
