Protein synthesis: mechanisms and regulation (2017)

Objectives of the course:

The first part will be an introduction to the mechanics and regulation of protein synthesis in bacteria and eukaryotes.  The second part will be the utilization of this background information to address problems in the current scientific literature.  The third part will be the creative “what would you do next?” (i.e. the planning of future experiments to extend the research paper discussed).

 

Learning objectives and competences:

Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

·         identify individual steps in protein synthesis

·         understand the energy requirements for protein synthesis

·         analyze situations for changes in protein synthesis that are, or are not, mRNA specific

·         analyze the current literature in protein synthesis

·         design experiments to extend knowledge

 

Compulsory program:

Students will present and discuss current protein synthesis literature in seminar type format, and write one term paper of “what would you do next?” expected to be 3-4 pages.

Introductory biochemistry
