Shown is an illustration of a flow cell in which electrokinetic energy conversion takes place. Here a pressure difference across the membrane drives positive lithium ions through, while their negative counterpart is repelled. This induces electrode reactions which sends electrons through an external electrical circuit, lighting the lightbulb. Thus the kinetic energy of a pressure difference is converted into electricity

Strategy for synthesizing expensive azo- and azoxy-benzene from cheap nitrobenzene by photocatalysis: In his PhD project, Yitao Dai has developed a facile photosynthesis method, by which azo-dyes can be obtained selectively via reductive coupling of nitroaromatic precursors under purple light irradiation. In contrast, blue light illumination can lead to the generation of azoxy-products. The method allows controllable synthesis of azo- and azoxy-compounds in a simple catalytic system using g-C3N4 under ambient conditions and illumination by visible light.
