Scanning tunneling microscopy image, with atomic resolution, of graphene on Ir(111) after the exposure to vibrationally excited H2. The exposure leads to a chemical modification of graphene that increases the graphene-metal interactions. Consequently, the graphene electronic properties are modified. The increased graphene-metal interaction leads to an increased protection of the metal surface towards oxidizing species.
