For several years, calf mortality and diarrhoea has been higher in organic compared to conventional dairy herds.

During her PhD studies, Mari has compared organic and conventional dairy herds in order to identify risk factors for calf morbidity and mortality, and has furthermore conducted experimental studies in organic dairy herds in order to study the effect of management strategies – colostrum bank feeding, pasteurisation of milk as well as group size  - on these parameters,

The PhD study contributes to suggestions for improvement of farm management practices that in turn will lead to decreased calf morbidity and mortality in Danish organic dairy herds.

The PhD degree was completed at Department of Animal Science, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
