Mammary nutrient uptake and output of high-prolific sows

During his studies, Uffe investigated the uptake of nutrients by the mammary glands at different stages of late gestation and during lactation. Moreover, the impact of dietary arginine, fiber and fat on sow performance, including the output of colostrum and milk, was studied.

The mammary glands of sows develop rapidly from late gestation to lactation, and piglets are exclusively dependent on the output of nutrients from the sow mammary glands during their first weeks of life. Uffe quantified the mammary plasma flow and the uptake of nutrients by the mammary glands as well as the resultant production of colostrum and milk in high-prolific sows.

These results contribute to the understanding of the quantitative metabolism and utilization of amino acids and other nutrients in the mammary glands. Moreover the findings provided insight into potential limiting factors for the production of colostrum and milk.

The PhD project was carried out at the Department of Animal Science, Science and Technology, Aarhus University, Foulum.
