Multifunctionality of riparian buffer strips

Sandra Hille

During her studies, Sandra Hille investigated the multifunctionality of riparian buffer strips in Denmark. Riparian buffer strips are narrow, unfertilized strips of land between water bodies and fields. They are mainly implemented in agricultural areas to reduce the impact of agriculture on the aquatic environment. Sandra studied how these areas can be managed best to maximize their nutrient retention and plant diversity value, while also gaining added value through the production of biogas from buffer plant material.

The new research findings contribute to the understanding of how buffer strips in agricultural landscapes should be managed to maximize their ecosystem functions and services.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Bioscience and Department of Agroecology, Graduate School for Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
