Onion Quality – Gaining a Better Understanding of Quality Changes During Storage

During his studies, Md. Nahidul Islam researched how onion quality can be determined and modelled during storage and how sorting by use of hyperspectral imaging can separate different onion qualities. Quality changes cause higher respiration rates and more respiratory heat. Nahidul studied how microclimate and the response of the onion can be used to determine quality changes, and how different qualities of onions in sorting can be determined non-destructively. The new research findings contribute to a better understanding of how quality changes during storage can be determined by the use of temperature measurement and quality of onions can be determined by hyperspectral imaging technique to reduce food losses and waste.

The PhD degree was completed at Department of Food Science, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
