Suitable protein crops and field management practices for animal feed protein production in a biorefinery

During her studies, Zeinab investigated and compared the crude protein yield and the theoretical extractable protein in a range of crops that are designed for supply of biomass to biorefineries. It was assumed that the soluble protein can be easily extracted in a biorefinery whilst extraction of the cell wall-bound protein will depend on using the pre-treatment techniques e.g. utilizing enzymes or physical disintegration of biomass. The effect of crop management practices in the field such as harvest date and leaf/stem separation on concentration and amount of extractable true protein was also investigated.

The new research findings contribute to the identification of the most appropriate species for the European protein production and decision making with regards to appropriate field managements, in order to provide the basis for a biorefinery industry.

The PhD degree was completed at the Agroecology department, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
