The Feeding Value of Green Forages to Dairy Cows

PhD defence, Friday 27 October 2017, Marianne Johansen.

Marianne Johansen

During her studies, Marianne Johansen researched in the feeding value of green forages to dairy cows. Grass-clover silage is commonly used in Danish cattle production, and the cultivation is associated with environmental benefits compared to cultivation of annual crops. However, knowledge on how different grass or legume species affect feed intake and milk production is limited, and the utilisation of protein is often poor.
Marianne studied how feed intake and milk production in dairy cows was affected by feeding different grass and legume species. Marianne also studied, how wilting of grass-clover before ensiling affected the amount of amino acid digested in the small intestine. The new research findings contribute to the understanding of how green forages affect the milk production, which is important knowledge for a combined optimisation of both forage cultivation and milk production.
