Guidelines for supervisors

In order to be supervisor for PhD students at the Department of Engineering, it is required that the main supervisor has a PhD. The head of the ENG PhD committee can in exceptional cases grant exceptions to this rule.

In addition, the supervisor needs to demonstrate his/her ability to systematically supervise PhD students and ensure gradual transition from being a student to becoming a young, promising and independent researcher. It is recommended that the supervisor follows an apprenticeship approach, for example by writing publications with the PhD students.

It is expected that clear agreements for supervision principles are made between the PhD student and the supervisor (preferably in written form). It is also expected that regular meetings are planned, although the interaction may vary from daily to monthly depending upon the section. Interacting with the PhD students less than once a month is not acceptable.
