PHD COURSE: Planning and controlling a PhD Project

This course will give a brief introduction to Project Management disciplines with focus on planning and controlling the students own PhD projects.

As a specific outcome all participants will have a plan with deliverables, milestones, and schedules for their PhD Project.

It is recommended, but not a prerequisite, that the student have a basic knowledge about projects either obtained from work in organizations, being part of research project(s) or others.

The course will cover two and a ½ day:

  • Module 1: 13-14.03.2018 from 9.00 to 16.00
  • Module 2: 28.08.2018 from 9.00-12.00

Participants who are absent more than a half day (3 hours) will not be able to pass the course unless special arrangement has been agreed with the course lecturers.

Course content:

  • The PhD Project: Context, content and process
  • Work packages, Work Break Down (WBS) Structures
  • Personal planning
  • Project Planning with activities and milestones
  • Brief about estimation, uncertainty, duration and workload
  • Risk Management
  • Control and progress measurement
  • Plan and control their own PhD project with respect to deliverables, milestones and schedules
  • Describe and understand basic elements of planning and controlling a project as well as risk management

At the end of the course the student should be able to:

  • PhD project plan with work breakdown structure, work packages, personal planning, milestones and time schedule, and risks
  • PhD project supervisor agreement

ECTS credits: Only by agreement with the relevant Graduate School. The course corresponds to 2 ECTS    

Level of course: PhD course

Capacity: Minimum 12 and maximum 24 participants

Please be aware that registration to the course not necessarily equals admission. You will receive an e-mail no later than 06.02.2018 notifying whether you are admitted to the course.

Ph.d.-students from other universities can be accepted to the course, if not all seats are taken by registration deadline. Due to an Agreement between Danish Universities coming into force as of 1 January 2011, participants from other universities than Aarhus University will be charged DKK 1,200 per ECTS. In principle this also applies to external parties, but exemption can be granted under specific circumstances.  


Lectures, exercises, group work, discussions, individual/group assignment working with the participants own PhD projects

The students shall prepare the following two documents:
