The classical heritage in Denmark – from canon to critique

The Greek and Roman past has since the Renaissance been fundamental in the construction of European and Western culture.

Denmark has been part of this development even if Denmark never was part of the ancient cultural world. The classical literature and art has been integrated in Danish cultural life, and is still considered fundamental in the general education.

However, the idea of a special European or Western canon as a basis for a common identity is challenged today by globalisation, multiculturalism, and post-colonialism.

What role does the classical heritage have in Danish museums today?
This will be discussed using objects in the collection of the Museum of Ancient Art and Archaeology as examples.
