AU Career PhD & JR Newsletter

December 2020

With 2020 soon coming to an end, it is safe to say that we are all closing an unusual year. We know that many of you have struggled with cancelled plans for international stays, have had to apply for prolongation of your scholarships and have had to deal with the struggle of writing from home sometimes in the (rather demanding) company of small children. Your aptitude for flexibility, perseverance and ability to handle set-backs has been severely tested, and we hope for a return to normal times very soon.
At our end, we were at first worried about the effects of Covid-19 on the labour market, but on a positive note, we actually ha
ven’t registered a decline in recruitment in the areas where researchers
typically find employment. Therefore, this year again, many researchers have left “the yellow walls” and found employment in both private and public organizations both in DK and abroad.
Whether the troubling times have let more people to consider career paths outside of academia, or whether it has been because of the convenience of the online format, we have had a record high number of participants in our events this year. Thank you all for joining our different webinars throughout the year, and we hope also to “see” you at our upcoming events.

On another positive note, it has been decided to prolong the Junior Researcher Development Programme (JRDP) with a year, and we are currently working out a plan for that. Unfortunately, we are saying goodbye to Catrine Rumohr who many of you have met in counsellings and as co-host at our events. Catrine will be hard to follow, but we will try to find a suitable replacement as soon as possible, so we can provide you with the service you deserve.

Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and safe New Year from AU Career PhD & JR!

In 3MT, PhD students present their research project in three minutes for an audience of non-specialists with only one static slide – and no other resources. This challenging exercise develops presentation, research and academic communication skills and supports the development of the researcher’s capacity to explain their work effectively.

In 2021 the internal winner at AU will win a 35,000 DKK travel grant and the video of the performance will be submitted to the international competition held in the Coimbra Group of more than 35 European universities.

Online PhD Career Day... or Week?

PhD Career Day will take a new, more ambitious format in the coming year. We are doing our best to accommodate all departments and faculties with relevant content, and therefore, we have plans to extend PhD Career Day to a 3 day PhD Career Week. We will keep the online format, as we do with all of our events currently, and the content will be a mix of career related webinars and 45 min. sessions with 12-15 different companies. This way you don’t have to participate all three days but can log in for the webinars and company sessions of your choice. We think it will be great, so put a mark in your calendar for 20-22. April 2021! More information will follow in the spring.
