Master your presentation skills and practice science communication, while competing for a 35.000 kr. travel grant.

Aarhus University invites all its PhD students to participate in this year’s "3 Minute Thesis" competition (3MT) on 17th of March 2022.

3MT is about more than the winning prize. By participating, you will get the chance to develop and enrich your skillset through the preparation workshops and feedback sessions.

You will participate in a workshop with Linda Greve science communication expert, who will equip you with knowledge on how to present your research to non-specialists - a skill highly sought after in the private sector. 

You will also master public speaking techniques, allowing you to approach any future presentation with confidence.

On top of this, the lucky winner will go home with a 35.000 kr. travel grant, which will enable you to pursue your own research interest.

What is the language of the event?

- The event will be in English, so both international and Danish applicants are encouraged to apply.

What is the signup deadline?

- The signup deadline is in 2 weeks, on 8 February 2022, 23:30.

Where and when is the competition?

- The presentations will be held physically at Stakladen, and live streamed for viewers at home.

- The finale will be held on 17 March 2022, 16:00-18:30.

What are the rules of 3MT?

- In 3MT PhD students present their research project in three minutes for an audience of non-specialists with only one static slide – and no other resources.

- This challenging exercise develops presentation, research and academic communication skills and supports the development of the researcher’s capacity to explain their work effectively.

What are the prizes?

- The internal winner at AU wins a 35,000 DKK travel grant and the video of the performance is submitted to the international competition held in the Coimbra Group of more than 35 European universities. 

- A Coimbra Group panel will then select the top three candidates, who will be invited to present at the Coimbra Group annual conference on June 7-10 in Padova, Italy.

It promoted my science communication skills: being able to talk about your research to non-specialists is a skill often needed outside of academia, for instance when giving interviews to the broader media. Participating also challenged me to take a deeper reflection on my research: What am I actually doing? And why? Why is my research important? What does it mean for society?

In addition, winning the 35.000 travel grant gives me a great opportunity to foster my own research interests, and to be less dependent on senior researchers for funding. I can use this grant to pursue my own ideas.”
